At Funky Geisha, every detail matters—from the mystical atmosphere to the way you enjoy your food. And yes, chopsticks are also part of the experience. Beyond being utensils, they are a symbol of Asian culture and respect for the act of eating.
Below, we share some fun facts and practical tips so you can feel like you’re in Asia… without leaving Cancún or Los Cabos.
1. Did you know chopsticks existed before forks?
Originating in China more than 3,000 years ago, chopsticks were first used as cooking tools and gradually became everyday utensils throughout Asia. Their simplicity holds deep symbolism: balance, respect, and harmony.
2. At Funky Geisha, they’re part of the ritual
When you sit at your table, you’ll find chopsticks placed neatly on a chopstick rest. In each of our locations—Cancún or Los Cabos—we invite you to enjoy your dishes calmly and mindfully, in true Eastern style. Whether you’re skilled with them or not, our servers can offer adapted options if needed.
3. What you should NOT do (cultural etiquette)
In Japan and China, there are important rules for using chopsticks. Some of the most essential are:
Don’t stick them upright in rice (this is associated with funeral rituals).
Don’t point or play with them.
Don’t pass food directly from one pair of chopsticks to another (a funeral symbol in Japan).
At Funky Geisha, we aim to honor these traditions with respect and style.
4. How to use them correctly
Hold one chopstick between your thumb and ring finger (like holding a pencil).
The second chopstick rests at the base of the thumb and on the ring finger.
Only move the top chopstick to grip the food.
Sounds tricky? Don’t worry—we also offer fork options if you prefer!
5. Which dishes are ideal to eat with chopsticks at Funky?
Sushi rolls and nigiri
Sashimi
Asian-style salads
Wok-seared meat and vegetable strips
Pad Thai
Yakimeshi
Even some of our shishas are served with small fruits you can pick up with chopsticks as part of the visual ritual.

Eating with chopsticks isn’t a trend. It’s an art.
At Funky Geisha, every moment has a purpose. Chopsticks aren’t just part of the service—they’re a way to connect with ancient traditions and experience food with intention.
